2017 Mazda MX-5-RF

Mazda’s Miata has always been a car that you either have to love for its sporty styling and pure-fun-on-the-road personality or hate for its itty-bitty size. Whatever side of the fence you stand on, it’s still worth your time to sit up and take notice of the latest Miata incarnation. What about this vehicle has car enthusiasts buzzing?

What the RF Means

The “RF” part of the new Miata’s name stands for “retractable fastback.” Indeed, the manner in which the Miata goes from sleek coupe-like creation to converted convertible is eye-catching and a departure from how a traditional hardtop lowers its roof. The roof opens in just 12 seconds, at speeds up to 6 mph; a pair of overhead roof panels fold as the rear window disappears behind the seats and the two flying-buttress supports lift to make room for the folded top.

The RF design reminds many of the Porsche Targa 911 in the way its roof goes down. The design is a refreshing change for Miata fans who have been demanding a coupe version of the car for years.

Still All the Miata Fun

When you think of Miata, you probably think of zipping around in a machine that hugs the road and delivers fun on paved pathways. That experience hasn’t changed with the 2017 MX-5 RF. With 155 horsepower, it isn’t a muscular car by any means, but the lightweight frame means that 155 ponies is more than enough.

The retractable fastback adds 110 pounds of weight over the traditional soft-top Miata, but most drivers are unlikely to notice how the extra bit of weight influences the car’s performance. It remains a lightweight car, and that featherweight quality also gives the car decent fuel economy.

When Can You Get Your Own MX-5 RF?

Mazda expects to start taking orders for its latest convertible in the summer of 2016, with the first deliveries taking place toward the end of the year. If you can’t decide if a Miata is to your taste, you can head to Mazda of South Charlotte to take a 2016 Miata for a spin.

While the experience won’t be exactly like what you’ll get in the new RF, you can still become acquainted with some of the features that make the Miata such a popular car:

  • Customizability. Mazda dealerships and other places that work on Miatas will be able to offer many ideas for making your Miata truly unique.
  • Surprisingly accommodating interior space. Even folks who are 6 feet tall or slightly taller won’t feel too cramped in a late-model MX-5.
  • A driving experience that makes you feel at one with the road, whether you’re staying close to Charlotte or taking off on an epic road trip.
  • Zippy acceleration that takes the car from 0 to 60 in under six seconds.
  • Responsive handling.

The 2017 MX-5 RF turned heads and raised voices at the latest New York Auto Show. This outstanding vehicle deserves your attention.
