This five-passenger compact crossover sport utility vehicle is sold in three trim levels: base Sport trim, mid-level Touring, and top-tier Grand Touring. All trim levels are configured with your choice of either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

Mazda CX-5 Sport

The entry-level Sport trim level offers full- power accessories, air conditioning, 17-inch alloy wheels, tilting and telescoping steering column, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, a four-speaker audio system with a CD–player, auxiliary audio jack, USB/iPod interface, cruise control, a 60/40 split rear bench seat, and a height adjustable driver seat as standard equipment. Early production Sport trim CX-5s will also be equipped with the Mazda Connect Package which includes a 7-inch touchscreen LCD monitor, Hi-Definition radio, Pandora internet connectivity, automatic crash notification, audio system voice controls, and SMS text messaging capability. Later production runs add a backup camera to this extensive list of standard features.

The mid-level Touring model adds a more powerful engine, a blind spot monitoring system, a rear cross traffic alert system, keyless entry, a six-way power adjustable driver seat, a leather wrapped steering wheel, a six-speaker audio system, upgraded cloth upholstery, and a 40/20/40 folding rear bench seat as standard fare. A sunroof and Bose premium nine-speaker audio system can be added as optional equipment with a Moonroof or Bose Audio upgrade.

Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring

The top-rung Grand Touring CX-5 includes all of the equipment listed above and adds a dual-zone automatic climate control system, leather upholstery, heated front seats, satellite radio, heated mirrors, automatic headlamps, automatic windshield wipers, and 19-inch wheels. Add the Technology Package (available on the Touring and Grand Touring models) and you also get the Smart City Brake Support System, a navigation system, adaptive LED headlights, LED running lamps, LED foglamps, LED tail lights, and an auto-dimming rear view mirror. The optional i-ActiveSense Package includes the Smart Brake Support system, a lane departure warning system, and adaptive cruise control.

The 2016 Mazda CX-5 is available with one of two different inline four-cylinder engines. The first is a 2.0-liter engine that produces 155-horsepower and 150 lb.-ft. of torque. The second is a 2.5-liter engine that manages 184-horsepower and 185 lb.-ft. of torque. The smaller engine is matched with a six-speed manual transmission and the larger engine uses a six-speed automatic transmission. The 2.0-liter is standard equipment on the Sport trim level. The Touring and Grand Touring trim levels feature the larger engine and automatic transmission as standard equipment.

In EPA testing, the 2.0-liter equipped Sport version earned impressive fuel efficiency numbers of 26 mpg city/35 mpg highway/29 mpg combined. Upper echelon trim level vehicles outfitted with the larger engine and automatic transmission averaged 26 mpg city/33 mpg highway/29 mpg combined.

Safety First

The 2016 Mazda CX-5 comes standard with electronic stability and traction control, antilock brakes, front side airbags, and side curtain airbags. Optional on the Sport version and standard on the Touring and Grand Touring versions is a blind spot monitoring system and a rear cross traffic alert system.
