Mazda SKYACTIV Technology

Exactly What is SKYACTIV Technology and What Does it Mean for Everyday Drivers?

A lot of people from cities near Charlotte, like Matthews and Concord, NC, ask that question, and it’s an interesting one – the answer is even more interesting. SKYACTIV is not just one technological advancement, it’s actually a suite of technologies that all come together to make automobiles by Mazda lighter, faster and more efficient. Most car-makers are all about electric and hybrid technologies, but Mazda has a taken a different direction – improving the design of not only the chassis, transmissions and bodies, but also the internal-combustion processes that have powered cars since Karl Benz got creative in 1885.

The suite of SKYACTIV technologies include:

  • SKYACTIV-G Gasoline Engines
  • SKYACTIV-D Diesel Engines
  • SKYACTIV Chassis and Body Design
  • SKYACTIV Automatic and Manual Transmissions
  • i-ELOOP Energy Recovery Technology

What is SKYACTIV Engine Technology in a Gasoline Engine?

At this point in history, 95% of the engines we use are either diesel or gasoline combustion – a figure that will only drop by about 5% in the next ten years. Mazda sees this as a challenge – make the combustion engines we use now, and will still use in the future, more efficient. That’s why Mazda engineers constantly work to make combustion engines better.

The SKYACTIV-G employs a new header design to lower the temperature of exhaust gases, resulting in a more efficient fuel/air mixture, and 15% lower emissions. This design offers better fuel consumption and 10% to 15% more low- to mid-range torque than their previous 2.0L gasoline engine. All of this means that driving from places like Charlotte, North Carolina to towns like Rock Hill and Fort Mill, South Carolina, is less expensive, cleaner and more fun, too.

What is SKYACTIV Engine Technology in a Diesel Engine?

Diesel fuel engines are all about compromise when it comes to putting out the big torque numbers expected of them – and the technology of diesel engines hasn’t advanced much. SKYACTIV-D technology lowers the compression ration from 18:1 to 14:1, and is basically a two-stage turbo, variable exhaust timing and high-pressure multi-hole piezo injectors clean up the diesel engine. This technology means an increase of 20% in both fuel efficiency and torque from the 2.2L twin-turbo diesel engine – and that means that this lightweight, clean and quiet engine can produce the big torque of a V8 engine, while using the amount of fuel more commonly associated with a hybrid engine.

SKYACTIV-Drive Automatic and SKYACTIVE-MT Manual Transmissions

To get all of that saved energy to the ground, Mazda needed to create the most efficient transmission possible. After much research into transmissions and what has been done so far Mazda took the best of all of them, added a big smart brain in the form of an advanced control module which offers smooth shifting for precise response and dependability, and ended up with the SKYACTIV-Drive automatic 6-speed with a multi-clutch torque converter for quicker and more frequent lock-ups for a smooth ride. The other transmission, the SKYACTIVE-MT (manual) features more efficient torque routing through the gear-sets, a shorter-throw shifter and 16% less weight.

i-ELOOP Energy Recovery Uses the Energy You Save

What is SKYACTIVE technology worth all together, and what is the use of all of this brilliant and cutting-edge technology if you allow any of that gained energy to be wasted? Mazda doesn’t want to waste a drop, so they capture the energy produced while braking with their i-ELOOP technology. This system acquires the kinetic energy from braking and converts it into electricity which is then used to power the electronics in the vehicle. Slowing downnow means charging up – and the result is around 5% better fuel economy, and saved fuel dollars.
