2017 Mazda3 Hatchback

The Mazda3 has been known as one of the sportiest entries in the compact car class – a real looker year after year. The updated 2017 Madza 3 doubles down on its reputation, taking an already great looking car, giving it a tweak here and there and delivering a compact car that’s better looking than ever. Unveiled earlier this year in Japan and rolling out this fall in the United States, the new version brings everything you already love about the Mazda3, but even better.

You’ll have to look close to see the changes – after all, the Mazda3 was already a great-looking car that gives superior fuel efficiency and performance and there’s no need to mess with something this close to perfection. Basically, the front end has been redesigned – tweaked, really – and the interior materials received an upgrade. As for the exterior, the major differences include an updated grille and updated lighting. Hatchbacks also sport an updated rear bumper.

You’ll feel the difference more than seeing it with the new premium interior materials. You’ll also notice what you don’t hear. The new Mazda3 is quieter than ever, with increased focus on dampening materials in the cabin area. To really enhance the sportiness, opt for the perforated leather interior – available in black or almond – and go with the optional heated steering wheel.

Of course, Mazda continues to strive to build a better car and the new Mazda3 does bring some substantive tech innovations. The most notable is the G-Vectoring Control. Part of the Skyactiv Vehicle Dynamics that are part of the Mazda’s whole new generation of vehicles, G-Vectoring Control provides better traction by adjusting the torque of the engine to control the load on each of the four axles in response to your steering. While older Mazda3 models were already known for superior handling, this takes it to the next level. You’ll notice the difference the first time you’re in a challenging steering situation. The system also serves to make acceleration smoother than ever. Other significant improvements have been made to the safety systems, including blind spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition and active driving display.

The new Mazda3 comes with two engine options, both fuel sipping 4-cylinders:

  • 2.5-liter – produces 184 hp
  • 2.0-liter – produces 155 hp

The smaller engine, coupled with the available 6-speed manual transmission provides 30 mpg in the city and 41 mpg on the highway – a combined rating of 34 mpg. Even the larger engine provides a combined rating of 32 mpg.

In short, if you’re already a fan of the Mazda3, you’re going to love the new model. It’s everything previous models have been with most cosmetic changes being minor. The new features make it safer than ever to drive and the fuel economy has the Mazda3 recognized as one of the greenest cars available in the American market today. Its looks are as sporty as ever, making the Mazda3 truly stand out in the compact car class – a class that tends to be pretty plain vanilla.
