G-Vectoring, Mazda6

When you hear that a vehicle is new and upgraded, you probably expect that you’ll see visible changes – after all, what signifies an upgrade in a vehicle more than a new grille or new lines on the side sheet metal? At Mazda, they think a little differently than a number of car companies out there. With a motto like “Driving Matters,” it shouldn’t be a surprise that many of the upgrades to the 2017 Mazda 6 are not in the looks or entertainment department, but in the driving department – and some of them, you may never even notice.

G-Vectoring

Leave it to Mazda to put thousands of hours of research and development into a system whose main purpose is not to be noticed. An electronic system that is debuting in the 2017 Mazda 6, G-Vectoring makes imperceptible adjustments to torque output to the individual wheels as the steering wheel is turned, mimicking driving techniques that race and rally drivers use to improve comfort and confidence.

In layman’s terms, this means that the driver has to make fewer minute adjustments and corrections during maneuvering, or even when driving in straight lines. Removing the need for these adjustments not only improves ride quality and handling, but also reduces driver fatigue, meaning the driver can drive longer while staying fresher. This is an added bump to safety above and beyond comfort and performance.

Safety, Refined

The i-Activsense system of safety assists available in the 2017 Mazda6 is an upgrade from last year’s system, something you may not notice if you’re not looking at it hard. A new, improved camera has been utilized to allow the Mazda6 to detect pedestrians, along with the cars and large objects that were detected before, when they move into the path of the car at city speeds. Paired with the emergency-braking function, which now operates between the speeds of 9 and 99 miles per hour, it can mitigate or even avoid a pedestrian impact.

Finally, an Upgrade You’ll See!

Not everything is behind the scenes in the new Mazda 6. Inside the cabin, numerous small changes have been made for an improved experience. Notably, a new steering wheel also has an available heating function for the cooler parts of the year. Both the driver-information display and the pop-up head-up display have been improved by upgrading from the monochromatic displays to full-color displays, and the head-up display’s settings have been tied in to driver’s seat memory function. Thicker front-door glass has been provided to help keep road noise out, and more noise-reducing material in the doors, as well as in the headliner.

Grand Touring Hits a Premium

A new Premium package, offered only on the Mazda 6 Grand Touring trim, is a way to raise the Mazda 6 to newly-luxurious heights. Nappa leather with titanium-gray piping and stitching is offered in the choice of black or almond colors, and the rear outboard seats are heated. A heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel with unique chidori technique stitching is standard, while interior trim receives a warmer, darker hue for a more subtle look. Map lights swap out standard units for LED units, while the headliner is switched to black.
