Mazda3 4 Door

Based on the same platform and featuring the same incredible driving experience and advanced performance dynamics that Mazda has become known for, the Mazda3 4-door sedan and Mazda3 5-door hatchback are nearly identical siblings. Any Mazda owner will tell you that you can’t go wrong with either one.

That being said, there are some distinct differences between the two, beyond simply having that extra door in the back. Highlighting these differences can help the potential Mazda3 buyer make the difficult decision between the two.

Mazda3 5 Door

  • Exterior Dimensions: While both the Mazda3 4-door and Mazda3 5-door have identical wheelbases, the same front and rear track, and the same width, height, and ground clearance. Where they differ is that the 5-door comes in at 175.6 inches, a full 4.7 inches shorter than the 4-door edition.
  • Cargo Volume: Thanks to the hatchback, the Mazda3 5-door has enough space for 20.2 cubic feet of cargo. Folding down the rear seats opens it up to a maximum of 47.1 cubic feet, enough to compete with compact crossover SUVs. With only a trunk, the cargo space in the Mazda3 4-door is limited a bit more, at 12.4 cubic feet of volume. The good news is that, while cargo volume may change, both versions have identical seating dimensions, so both will be adequately roomy for full-sized adults.
  • Weight: Small variances in weight come at every model level of the Mazda3. While the 5-door model weighs in between 20 and 30 pounds lighter in the Sport and Touring Trims, at Grand Touring level it is actually 33 pounds heavier than the 4-door when equipped with the manual transmission. With the automatic transmission at that level, the weights are nearly identical. The overall effect of this weight differences is virtually undetectable, even to the most sensitive driver.
  • Fuel Economy: Mazda’s SKYACTIV technology allows for the Mazda3 to have a potent engine, without hurting the wallet at the gas pumps. When equipped with the base 2.0-liter engine, the Mazda3 4-door and Mazda3 5-door get identical EPA-estimated fuel economy. Stepping up to the 2.5-liter engine sees a slight difference. With the manual transmission, both versions get 25 miles per gallon in the city, but the 4-door gets 34 miles per gallon on the highway versus 33 miles per gallon for the 5-door. With the automatic transmission, the 5-door is behind by a single mile per gallon both in the city and on the road. The same goes for the 2.5-liter engine when matched with the automatic transmission featuring i-ELOOP regenerative braking, with the 5-door getting one mile per gallon less city and highway.
  • 2.5-liter Availability: While both the 4-door and 5-door are available in Sport, Touring, or Grand Touring trim, the Mazda3 5-door gets an additional Touring 2.5 trim level. Retaining all of the features of the Touring level, it comes equipped with the 2.5-liter engine, capable of producing 184 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque. It also adds a power sliding-glass moonroof with one-touch open. This allows the 5-door buyer access to the 2.5-liter engine, without having to step up to the Grand Touring trim with leather seating and upgraded audio.
