All New Mazda CX-3

The 2017 Mazda CX-3 is a stunning subcompact crossover. The new model marks some minor changes to the equipment list, but keeps its best features. For a budget hatchback, it is a pleasant, fun drive, with style that belongs on a far more expensive car.

Exterior

The CX-3’s exterior exemplifies the company’s “Kodo” design language. It has a sporty, light exterior that looks, again, far more expensive than the $20,860 price tag for the base Sport models. The exterior has not changed since the 2016 model year, but that is not a bad thing when it looks the way it does. It is closely aligned to the Mazda 2 sedan and based off of the same chassis.

2017 CX-3 Interior

Interior

The interior is also well-styled, similar to the Mazda 3 in feel and with soft-touch wrapped dash elements. Higher trim levels offer the option of leatherette seats. The controls are simple, although the instrument gauges are monochrome and look utilitarian. There is a HUD available, albeit a fairly basic one. However, the simple and straightforward design also moves one out of the Mazda CX-3’s weight class and gives an impression of style and taste.

Performance

Needless to say, it’s not the quickest vehicle on the road, but the Mazda CX-3 is well known for its excellent handling. It has a modest 146 horsepower, but does offer a brisk pickup, especially in Sport mode. The all-wheel-drive version comes with a system which applies extra torque to the rear wheels when needed, including before the vehicle even starts moving. The performance is enhanced by a light curb weight, particularly in the front-drive models.

Safety

The CX-3 has decent safety ratings, with the exception of some weakness in side impact testing. The top Grand Touring model has, as an option, the i-ActivSense package of electronic safety including lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, rain-sensing wipers and smart headlines. It also comes with six airbags and stability control. It does have a CX-3 Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS.

Technology

In addition to the electronic safety features, the CX-3 comes with some interesting technology. Standard is the Mazda Connect infotainment system with 7″ touchscreen, smartphone mirroring and Bluetooth streaming audio. It also comes with keyless ignition. Touring models also have blind-spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alert and the stereo goes up to six speakers. The Tech Package on the Touring model has satellite and HD radio and Bose audio. The in-car entertainment is thus pretty good for a smaller vehicle.

The 2017 Mazda CX-3 is not a huge change from the 2016 model, but it does have some additions – and one feature that stays exactly the same. The price.
