When the names of two of the most well-known Mazda models are separated by one number, it’s not uncommon to hear, “So what’s the difference between them?” The Mazda3 and Mazda6 have plenty in common, but don’t be fooled into thinking there aren’t any differences.

With so many options available between the Mazda3 and Mazda6, sedan-lovers everywhere can find the perfect model to fit a busy life.

Car Size

The obvious difference between the Mazda3 and Mazda6 is size. Both models are four-door sedans, and the Mazda3 even has a 5-door option, but the Mazda3 is definitely the smaller of the two. Because of the size of the Mazda3, it has a smaller turning radius, great for maneuvering around tight spaces and into tighter parking spots.

Under the Hood

Both the Mazda3 and Mazda6 have the same basic engine, a 2.5L Inline-4. The Mazda 3 and Mazda6 come standard with an automatic transmission. Mazda3 has a slight edge on gas mileage, with 25 city miles and 33 highway miles per gallon.

Power and Speed

The Mazda6 has slightly higher horsepower than the Mazda3. A side-by-side comparison between the Mazda3 Premium Package and the Mazda6 Sport showed the Mazda3 with 186 horsepower and 186 torque while the Mazda6 comes with 187 horsepower and 186 torque.

Seating

Both the Mazda3 and Mazda6 seat up to five people. The interior of the Mazda6 has more leg room and head space. The Mazda3 is slimmer, great for fitting into tight spaces, but this reduces interior space for passengers.

Trims and Styles

With the Mazda6, you’ll have five trim options: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, Grand Touring Reserve or Signature. Within each, many features and benefits come standard. The Mazda3 is all about choice for every kind of driver. Choose from Select, Preferred or Premium package in automatic.

Entertainment and Navigation

Both Mazda3 and Mazda6 have the same entertainment and navigation features to choose from. Some may be standard or optional, depending on the trim you choose. After the typical CD player and radio, you’ll have choices for wireless or voice-activated control with your Bluetooth devices, as well as navigational aid and telematics systems.

Luxuries

What may come standard with the Mazda6 Touring or Grand Touring may be only optional for the Mazda3 Sport, but you’ll still have plenty of luxurious features to consider. Sunroofs, heated front seats, leather interiors, separate driver and front passenger climate controls, and cruise control are just a few. The Mazda Radar Cruise Control, different from the standard cruise control, is only available as an option for the Mazda3 s Grand Touring and the Mazda6 Grand Touring.

Whether you’re looking for something small and sporty to zip around town in, or you need a roomy four-door sedan for a busy lifestyle and growing family, the Mazda3 and Mazda6 are designed to fit your lifestyle. They both exemplify all that’s great about Mazda, with enough choices to be the perfect car for you.
